A man has suffered a severe head injury after a falling sofa hit him as it was pushed from a window in London’s busy tourist district. The man, who remains unnamed, had been walking down the street when the incident happened near the W London Leicester Square hotel in central London. A witness of the incident reported that the sofa “came flying over the top of the hotel’s flat roof” and plummeted to the ground, hitting a smartly dressed man who was walking by at the time.
The London Ambulance Service received calls of the accident at 8:52 and ambulances arrived immediately at the scene. The man was treated at the scene for his head injury and was then taken to a major trauma centre at a hospital in central London as a priority by air ambulance.
Critical “but stable” condition
It was reported by Scotland Yard that the man was in a critical “but stable” condition. The Health and Safety Executive has been informed and are due to open an investigation.
According to spokesman from W London Leicester Square, the incident happened at the Swiss Centre building – which houses the W London Leicester Square and another number of privately owned residences.
The man stated: “The exact circumstances of this accident are still being investigated by the local authorities, which we support in their investigations … Our thoughts and prayers go to the gentleman concerned, who is being treated in hospital for his injuries.”
