£105,000 to cyclist injured by speeding car

After spending four months in a wheelchair, an injured cyclist has been awarded £105K in compensation. The man, who remains unnamed, had been cycling on a roundabout near Corfe Mullen when a car, which was driving too fast, clipped his wheel. The 48-year-old spent 10 days in hospital and the next four months in a wheelchair due to the severity of his personal injuries.

After the bicycle accident happened in May 2010, the driver’s insurance company offered a compensation package of £56,000. However, when his injuries continued to impact his life, his lawyer pursued the claim for further damages, allowing the man to walk away with £105,000 in compensation.

Doctors were unable to remove metalwork for a further three years

Where the accident left the man with a fracture in his lower left leg, doctors were unable to operate on it for a prolonged length of time due to the severity of the swelling. When the leg was finally in a stable enough state to be operated, his knee was not. As a result, a plate was inserted in his leg from his ankle, where the fracture was then stablised with four screws. Doctors were unable to remove the metalwork for a further three years after the operation due to persisting problems and swelling. Later an MRI scan revealed that he had a full thickness tear in the posterior cruciate ligament with joint swelling. In July 2013 the cyclist had to undergo further surgery to reconstruct his ligaments – resulting in extensive time off work.

A long legal battle, assisted by forensic accounting evidence, saw the client walk away with £105,000 in compensation for his pain and suffering and lost earnings.
