Injured traffic officer wins compensation

Posted in: Car Accidents Road Traffic Accidents

A traffic enforcement officer has been awarded compensation after a drunk driver put an end to his career four years ago. 43-year-old Colin Hickey had been patrolling the outside of St Bede’s School in South Shields in 2011 when a driver pinned him between his van and metal railings. Mr Hickey suffered severe personal injuries and and psychological damage in the accident.

Following the crash it was discovered that the driver of the van had been more than twice over the drink-drive limit. He was charged for driving with excess alcohol and for careless driving. However, following a four-year battle, Mr Hickey was able to recover £40,000 in compensation for the injuries he suffered. The compensation package covered Mr Hickey’s medical treatment, loss of earnings and repayments to the department for work and pensions.

“finally getting my life back to normal”

Where Mr Hickey hoped to return to work after he recovered, he found that the psychological scars made it difficult for him to fulfill his role as traffic officer adequately. Since the accident he has retrained as a security officer and has been able to return to work.

Mr Hickey said: “For a long time I didn’t know what to do when I knew I wasn’t able to return to work”. He added that the compensation package made a tremendous difference to his recovery, stating: “I feel like I am finally getting my life back to normal.”
