Ambulance crash leaves two injured

Posted in: Pedestrian Injuries Road Traffic Accidents

A serious crash on the A40 saw two pedestrians critically injured. An ambulance car, which had been responding to an emergency in Cheltenham, hit two men aged 30 and 32. The men had been on the road near GCHQ at 00:20 on Sunday when they were hit by a rapid-response car. The paramedic that was driving the ambulance car was “shaken but uninjured”, according to police.

The 30-year-old man was from Cricklade in Wiltshire, and the 32-year-old man was from Bristol. Both were taken to a nearby hospital with serious injuries, yet the reason for them being on the A40 is still unknown by police.

Ambulance driver suspended

Officers closed the road for five hours to carry out an initial investigation, and the South Western Ambulance Service Trust said that they would soon carry out a “thorough investigation”.

The South Western Ambulance Service Trust vehicle had been on its way to an emergency when the road traffic accident happened. The trust was the first ambulance trust to be authorised as an NHS Foundation Trust, serving a total population of around 5.3million people. It covers an area of 10,000 square miles, which is around 20% of mainland England.

The driver of the ambulance car was suspended following the crash: standard practice during an investigation of this sort.
