Pothole compensation payouts on the rise

New figures have revealed that in the last year alone, pothole compensation payouts have increased by 20%. The figures show that Lincolnshire County Council has made 1,500 payouts to motorists since January 2012, with the sum increasing from £133,015 paid out in 2012 to £157,266 in 2013. Lincolnshire County Council was labeled ‘pothole capital of Britain’ as a result of these findings. Lincolnshire County’s highway boss, Cllr Richard Davies, said that the problem was down to a lack of government investment. He said: “there’s been under-investment for generations”. A Westbourne councillor has claimed that more needs to be done to maintain public pavements. Cracked and damaged pavements are putting members of the public at risk of injury every day, with some in need of very urgent repair. Brighton and Hove City councillor for Westbourne, Graham Cox, said that he receives hundreds of pavement-related complaints every month, affecting almost every street in Hove. With claims being made by the Central Government that councils are to blame for the country’s pothole problem, cyclists seem to be paying the price. According to numerous cycling charities, over 1000 cyclists are injured as a result of potholes every year. Boss of Sky Bicycle team wins damages after pothole crash

Team Sky cycling boss Fran Miller (34) has received undisclosed compensation from a council after her bike hit a pothole, leaving her with multiple injuries. The accident occurred on Oldham’s high street in 2010 where she was thrown off her bike after swerving to avoid a pothole. The accident left her with multiple broken bones, including fractures in her jaw, cheek and fingers, and a few of her teeth were knocked out.
